Conster reviews: Godzilla's Greatest Battles!!

Who needs RAID when Meggie's around?!
This selection, for the Super Famicom, (the Japanese version of the Super NES) was never released stateside, unfortunately. It's pretty cool but it still doesn't outdo the sheer power of Super Godzilla. It is a somewhat toned down version of Primal Rage (without the disgusting life/power meters that look like an artery connected to a heart, a spinal cord connected to a brain, and ridiculous amounts of gore, not to mention the monsters in that game eat their human worshippers) only with Toho monsters! I will (shamefacedly) admit that I came across an emulator ROM version of the game and that is how I am able to review it. Still trying to come across an actual cartridge (so if you have one you no longer want, I'll pay ya for it!)

The 1964 Ghidrah in lieu of the 1991 version in Super Godzilla.

In this game, which doesn't have a storyline nearly as elaborate as Super Godzilla, we have eight monsters to choose from: Godzilla (a cross between the 1964 version and the 1984 one), Angilas, Megalon, Mothra (the 92 version), Mechagodzilla 74, Ghidrah (the 60's version), Biollante, and Gigan. (In the two player round, Mechagodzilla '93 joins in the fray.) In fact, it doesn't have a storyline at all. It's just a butt whippin, tail swingin, foot stomping monster fest!

In a "Mortal Kombat" type setting, (another of my favorite games which I gave up cuz I have kids) whoever kicks the other monster's butt or has the most energy left, wins the game. The game play is as simple as that. The graphics are about as good as those of Super Godzilla. However, the music totally rawks!! The soundtrack blends the awesome works of Akira Ifukube with some brand new tunes, along with the monster caterwauling we've come to know and love out of the 16-bit machines. (For those of you ignoramuses who believe this is a fifteen year old boy talking, this is actually a soon to be 26-year-old single mom of three kids. Hehehe!)

I'd have to say that the game play actually resembles Street Fighter although Mothra can do a Sonya Blade type move that can remove the other monster's legs out from under him. In any case, the lettering is in Japanese, which only contributes to the zest I have for this game.

To Toho/Nintendo/whoever is choosing not to release these games here: What's the deal? You guys are missing out on a HUGE profit margin here in the States. We are your loyal fans! You command, we obey! *grin*

Well, that's about it for right now. I gotta get back to cleaning the mess the kids are perpetually making of this house, or my mother might just decide to snap out of her good mood and go back to her old, grumpy self. Hehehe!

You might think this is music from 'Greatest Battles'. It's not. It's from the first 8-bit Godzilla game and is of G's death battle with Ghidrah. Ha ha. Made you look. :)

Yes, but... what happens at the END?!?!?!?!?!
