MONSTER RATINGS!

I base this system of kaiju ratings on a scale (no pun intended) of one to ten, with ten being totemo suggoi (really fantastic!) and one being totemo warui (really bad)! I have attempted to make this list as complete and as comprehensive as I could. Note that this list consists of MY OPINION only, and thus as a source of factual information should not be taken as gospel. As always, you folks are fully entitled to disagree with what I have put here! ;)

Godzilla (aka Gojira) 10

Godzilla is the most recognized, most talked about monster in Japan and in the world...I think that the decision to make all these movies was a good one! Godzilla as a symbol of all the childhood fun we have had differs very much from the Godzilla that is a symbol of the horrors of nuclear war and atomic destruction...we need to remember that even now, it would be very easy to annihilate ourselves. We must not let this happen!

Rodan (aka Radon) 8

Next to Godzilla, stands Rodan! I gave Rodan an 8 not a 10 because he stands in Godzilla's cinematic shadow! Nevertheless, Rodan is also a symbol of the way nature kicks back when mankind tries to tamper with her, and so I also gave Rodan a high score.

Mothra (aka Mosura) 9

Mothra is one of the best monsters I have seen Toho come up with. She has a heart of gold when it comes to defending the world. Naturally, as a Christian, I get a bit uncomfortable watching parts in movies where Mothra is being worshipped, but I also know it's only fiction, so I have a tendency not to get upset. Still, when the Cosmos sing, I get goose bumps!

King Kong (aka Kingu Kongu) 10

King Kong isn't originally Japanese, nor is he a Toho monster....but still, because he was in a couple of Japanese movies (one with Godzilla) I like to mention him. I think that the area in the life of Kong that gets him in the biggest trouble is those pesky little male hormones....haha! Whenever Kong shows interest in a human female, all the human males object and so poor Kong ends up getting shot (except in the Japanese films....at least Toho was nice enough to let him live!) I think his BEST film was the first, 1933's KING KONG, despite the "dancing fur" and other cheesy special effects!

King Ghidora (aka Kingu Gidora) 10

King Ghidora is the best enemy Toho has come up with. I think it's because he came on the scene early in Godzilla's career, or because of his great power that Ghidora is so popular. Still, Toho could have given him arms....or couldn't they?

MechaGodzilla (aka MekaGojira) 10

I really consider MG one of Toho's better bad guys! Especially when they put the control box inside of a human being.(Terror of MechaGodzilla, 1974) <--- This movie actually scared me as a kid and captivated me as a teen.

Angilas (aka Angirasu) 5

I have always considered Angilas one of the minor monsters. I don't know why, because Angilas was the first monster that Godzilla (Gigantes) ever fought with.

Varan (aka Baran) 5

Another minor monster who's only been in a couple of films.

Baragon (aka Baragon) 4

I didn't see much of a point in the creation of Baragon except as an opponent of Godzilla. As it is, in a fight, Godzilla and Baragon never touched each other with a 20 mile giant cattle prod!

Gigan (aka Gaigan) 7

Gigan was a mean customer, boy! Packs a wallop!

Minya (aka Minira) 2

Minya looked ridiculous! Although I must say, I really enjoyed his movies as a child!

Moguera (aka Moguera...the old one from "The Mysterians") -12

This monster was totally underwhelming....enough said!

Monsters from the New Movies

Godzilla saurus (aka gojirasaurusu) 8

I love the way they tied in the slew of new movies with the original. You gotta admit, after seeing the godzillasaurus in "Godzilla vs King Ghidora" , that Toho has a way of kind of tying everything in with the original (although I'm not EVEN gonna say anything about them tying them in with all the others....it's as confusing to all of us Godzilla fans as a Hollywood romance!)

Biollante (aka Biorante.....or, as my daughter says, Bye-llo-wan-tay!) 7

Biollante is one of the better creatures that Godzilla has fought. It was hard for me to take her seriously as a plant (first stage: she looked like a rose!) but, after she mutated, boy, did the film pick up!

Mecha-King Ghidora (aka Meka Kingu Gidora) 10

Mecha King Ghidora was first known to me when I rented Super Godzilla from the local video store. I wrote Toho asking which movie it had been in, and they replied, "Godzilla vs. King Ghidora." I said to myself...now, wait a minute! I have that one.....don't I? I didn't!
So I looked it up on the Web and sure enough, there was an address and phone number of a man who could get me this movie. (Scott's address can be found on Sources page!) When I finally got the movie, I couldn't BELIEVE that Mecha King Ghidrah was actually fighting to SAVE mankind! But this is a very clever trick of Toho!

Battra (aka Batora) 8

Battra was another one which was first known to me through my rental of Super Godzilla! Battle Mothra? hmmm....

MechaGodzilla (aka Mekagojira) 10

When I first saw the new revised MechaGodzilla, I have to admit that it had as much appeal to me as a dentist's visit. Then I took a closer look at MechaGodzilla....actually watching the movie...that made me change my opinion! Actually, when the new TrendMasters' toys came out, looking at the backs of the boxes REALLY had me confused because I had not yet seen the movies! "Now wait just a %#&^*# minute! Ghidora was a SPACE MONSTER! AND what the &$*$ is a Dorat anyways?"
"MechaGodzilla, a UN robot? I hardly think so! The only MechaGodzilla I know of is the one created by space aliens! You know, the mean old jerks that took Katsura and made her into a robot? Where do these guys get off saying that it was built by the UN?" "Godzilla was a godzillasaurus injured by American troops? That's nice, but how did they know? Was it a lucky guess?"
(Note: now that I have seen all of G's new adventures I'm a bit less awateru (confused!))

Mogera (aka Mogera) 7

Mogera was a bit more impressive this time. However, I preferred to look at the pilot (Shinjo was cute, although I didn't mind looking at Kyo either!)

Space Godzilla (aka Supesu Gojira) 10

Space Godzilla is one of the best adverserial opponents I have ever seen! Really though, I thought he looked more impressive as "Super Godzilla" in the SNES game by the same name. As far as the new movies go, Space G comes out on top....though I have a feeling he's about to be knocked off his pedestal by Destroyer.

Destroyer (aka Desutoroia) 10

I am going to give Destroyer a 10. If SpaceGodzilla was mean, then Destroyer is pure evil! Space Godzilla never had the ability to slash through Godzilla's flesh with his crest the way Destroyer did!

Baby/Little/Junior Godzilla (aka Baby) 8

Highly prefer him ten to one over his older brother!

Fairy Mothra 8

Fairy Mothra is a vision which Miki Saegusa sees on occasion during the plot of SpaceGodzilla. Sometimes it transforms into an apparition of the Cosmos. If I had less manners....I would say something really intelligent, like, "That whacked-out chick is having one hell of a bad trip!" The good thing about it is that Fairy Mothra is obviously computer-generated.

Death Ghidorah 3

Those jerks down at Toho sound FX dept. are really getting sloppy. Death Ghidorah sounds almost exactly like a herd of pissed off elephants. And all he does is walk around the forest blowing up trees. How boring!

Dagahra 2.7

Dagahra, which appears in Mothra 2, is simply a Destroyah clone, but possesses killer starfish. BLEAUGH!!!!

King Ghidorah 10

This is the King Ghidorah that appeared in Mothra 3. This is the most wonderful incarnation I've yet to see of everyone's favorite beast.... especially because this one likes to eat annoying Japanese children for lunch.

Godzilla 2000 - 9
This is Godzilla in his newest incarnation. It is different enough from the other designs to lead me to believe that it is a cousin of some sort. Notice that the face has more of a vicious, raging expression, and the back plates are absolutely satanic looking! However, this Godzilla is not terribly bright. It simply wades through mortar fire heavy enough to penetrate its thick hide and blow scales all over the place and it sticks its head in its foes mouth at its behest.

Orga (G2K) 7

To be fair, I thought I would include Orga in this section. The design on this creature resembles little more than the Rancor from Star Wars; however, one interesting feat that it attempts is that it tries to swallow Godzilla whole, like a boa constrictor. What it didn't count on was Godzilla letting loose on its innards with a super-powerful hypernuclear blast. This mistake proved to be a fatal case of heartburn for Orga.

Monsters which I *could* have included, but chose not to, because THEY ARE NOT WORTHY OF MENTION!

Meganuron
Megalon
Jet Jaguar
Aspiga (Kumonga)
Giant Condor
Titanosaurus
Manda
Giant Octopus
Frankenstein (a Japanese guy wearing REALLY bad makeup! C'MON!!!)
Gargantuas
Ebirah (the Sea Monster)
Giant Sea Snake
Gorosaurus
Gimantis (Kamakuras)
Gabara
Ganime
Gezora
Kameba
Hedorah
