Prologue
The ocean
breeze was warm on the face of Daisuke Serizawa as he donned his scuba
gear in preparation.
He thought with satisfaction on his fateful decision. He would take the
awful device he'd created and set it off at the bottom of the bay...then,
as soon as Ogata had surfaced, he would cut his line and bury with him
forever,the secret of Oxygen Destroyer.
After the attack of Godzilla on Tokyo, and seeing the destruction on televised
air waves, he relented to use the awful thing...
His fiancee Emiko had fled the lab in terror after seeing it demonstrated.
After seeing the look on her face as the fish disintegrated, he knew.
He would take care of it.
Deeper and deeper he descended into the ocean depths. The fish scurried
about in different directions.
He watched as the bubbles rose, stirring Tokyo Bay into a jacuzzi of turmoil. The
last thing he saw, before he went to the Father, was Godzilla being torn
apart by the incredible force.
For Serizawa at least, the nightmare was over...but Emiko's...and Japan's...was
just beginning.....
40 years
later................
The sun
was shining brightly on the peaceful ocean water.
The woman in the helicopter looked out at the serene calm underneath. Something
on the horizon drew her attention....
A bright flash of light followed by a plume of smoke heralded the death
of one of the islands.
The woman turned toward the pilot in disbelief.
"Basu Island is gone," Miki Saegusa said softly.
Hong Kong,
Present Day
The aircraft
taxied down the runway in preparation for takeoff.
The pilot yawned in anticipation of what he thought would be another long,
routine, boring flight. Suddenly, he noticed a gigantic reptilian face
in the window!
He turned toward the Chinese co-pilot. "What is that thing?!?"he shouted.
In his native language, the Oriental replied,"It's a dragon....a red dragon!!!"
The monster had glowing red patches covering his legs and chest. In reality,
it was Godzilla.
But, something was horribly wrong. Godzilla feverishly thrashed about as
he tore Hong Kong to pieces. He fired his death ray on the water and felt
the scalding steam as the water reacted violently to the uranium.
His eyes, which had been brown before, now blazed thermonuclear red with
all the fury of atomic hell! His death ray, radioactive blue before, was
the same shade of infernal orangish red.
There was a frantic, almost epileptic quality to his movements...and a
crazed look in his eye. His physical condition was deteriorating fast.
At last, the fevered monster returned to the depths of the cool ocean.
A meeting was held in the USA to discuss Godzilla's latest attack. It is
determined that Godzilla is a threat to mankind, this time in a more urgent
and dangerous way.
The situation was fast becoming an emergency. Godzilla's atomic reactor,
equivalent to a human heart, was fast overheating, and unless a way could
be found to stop it, would cause Godzilla to explode, creating a chain
reaction on a global scale that would wipe out...
...all life on Earth.
A scientist in Tokyo visits the Yamane residence in Tokyo. He speaks with
Kenkichi Yamane, the son of the late Shinkichi Yamane, who was the adopted
son of the famous scientist, Dr. Yamane.
Ken Yamane has continued the study on Godzilla that his grandfather started
almost half a decade before. He also knows of the deadly force discovered
by Serizawa used to put the first Godzilla to death.
At first, Yamane is hesitant to cooperate with the government, but passion
overrules principle yet again when he learns that beautiful Miki Saegusa
is working there, and he joins the team that is hurriedly working to prevent
the destruction of the world.
Meanwhile, Ken's sister, Yukari Yamane is busy interviewing Dr. Ijuin,
a chemist and biophysicist.
The interview is seen on television by a wide audience, including Emiko
Yamane, who saw the Oxygen Destroyer of long ago. She calls her niece to
her home that evening and warns her against the use of *Micro-Oxygen* fearing
that it is too much like Serizawa's Oxygen Destroyer of forty years ago.
Ijuin is working to piece together a solution to a mystery from the bottom
of the sea. From the strata at the bottom of Tokyo Bay, he wishes to study
the chemicals from the Oxygen Destroyer used forty years ago.
He is busy monitoring the mud and pebbles from the bottom of Tokyo Bay
in his lab, and is amazed when the sensors pick up a lifeform, later noticing
that after the life sign died down, there was a small hole in the glass....and
a few stray bits of mud on the floor.
The ocean breeze gently blew a few strands of hair across Emiko's forehead.
As she watched Dr. Serizawa and Ogata submerge, she had a sinking feeling
that one of them would not be returning safely. She remembered the horror
as she relived it in her mind, again and again...the furious jets of bubbles
rising upward, the monstrous beast as it bellowed in agony and despair.........
Emiko Yamane jerked awake in the middle of the night to find herself
in her bed. Staring into the darkness, she replayed the events once again,
that had been forever imprinted indelibly in her memory....
The security guard strolled down the hallway at the aquarium. He was bored
as he shined his flashlight down the glass hallway.
The hallway consisted of plexiglass that formed a tunnel leading througha
gigantic aquarium filled with colorful tropical saltwater fish.
Up and down he strolled, until a flash of light caught his attention. What
he saw next, made him sick to his stomach.
A brightly colored fish swam cheerfully about and then suddenly stopped.
Before the security guard's eyes, the flesh of the fish was dissolving
as if some powerful acid had gotten into the tank!!!
In the next instant, the fish dropped to the bottom of the tank, dead,
nothing left save for a skeleton. To the man's horror, all of the fish
were soon in the same state.
Not wanting to believe, he backed away...in desperation he began to scream
for help.
Later, at the lab, a group of scientists watched the film of the fish's
demise. Ijuin's sharp eye for detail caught a small red shape darting past
the floating carcass of the agonizing fish.
As it turns out, prehistoric plankton mutated from the presence of chemicals
from the oxygen destroyer have made their appearance.
The police are called out to battle some eight-foot tall crab-like creatures
that have appeared in Tokyo. But they are ill equipped to face this new
menace.
The creatures have their own breath weapon that dissolves the internal
organs of the policemen, killing them all.
The creatures come out of the building to where the spectators and newscasters
are. In terror, they flee.
Yukari Yamane gets caught in a police car by one of the creatures. The
animal begins to rip the car to shreds and turn it over and over. She is
saved from certain death by Dr. Ijuin. Together they watch, as the Destroyer
monster melts in flames from a well placed grenade.
Meanwhile, an ailing Godzilla is making his way toward Okinawa and he is
so hot that he turns the seawater that comes in contact with his hide into
steam. The Super-X 3, a descendant of Super x 1 and 2 and a replacement
for MechaGodzilla and Mogera, is called into battle.
Super X 3 launches its freezing bombs at the hapless beast and rams a cadmium
missile down his throat. Godzilla is encased in his icy tomb for a period
of six hours, buying the Japanese people some time.
Godzilla Jr. appears off the shores of Japan to Miki's relief.
It is apparent by now that Godzilla will undergo thermonuclear meltdown
and that there is nothing that can be done to stop it. Over Miki's vehement
protests, Meru decides that the best thing to do would be to lure Jr. to
Tokyo.
Destroyers from all over Tokyo Bay had appeared in Tokyo to combine into
one giant beast that the military can no longer stop. Destroyer flies away.
Miki and Meru climb aboard the helicopter and fly to Junior's position.
Reaching out to Junior through the combined strength of their ESP, they
guide it to Tokyo. Junior lands in Tokyo and begins to whop Destroyer.
Destroyer gets the better of his scaly opponent before Junior Godzilla
fires a powerful blast of atomic plasma right in Destroyer's face.
Godzilla comes ashore, getting worse. Destroyer takes the opportunity to
evolve into a giant monster that is the worst foe Godzilla has ever faced.
Even as father and son call to one another, Destroyer flies out of nowhere
and grabs Junior by the throat, strangling him and flying about 1000 meters
before dropping the hapless Junior to the ground. Destroyer kills Junior
with its Micro-Oxygen weapon.
Miki and Meru rush to the side of the stricken Junior, and Miki begins
to cry.
Godzilla goes violently insane after seeing Junior mercilessly murdered
and begins to rip into Destroyer. Destroyer slices through Godzilla's reptilian
flesh with its horn.
Destroyer changes form again, this time becoming the little aggregate Destroyers
that begin to crawl on him. A snarling Godzilla tosses these pests away
and goes over to where a lifeless Junior lies.
Bending over the broken body of his dead child, Godzilla mournfully tries
to pass on his life force to revive Junior to no avail. Frustrated at his
failure, and attacked once again by a huge Destroyer, Godzilla's condition
destabilizes even further, buoying his temperature to over 1200 centigrade.
Destroyer flies off only to be shot down by a waiting Super x 3.
As the smoke poured off of his dying body, Godzilla felt his heart begin
to melt. The human onlookers have to squint as the light given off by Godzilla's
melting down reaches unbearable proportions. Indeed, the scene is incongruously
beautiful, seeming to take on a haunting quality.
Miki felt the sting of tears as the flesh slid off of Godzilla's bones.
She couldn't help not feeling the grief as the luminous light betrayed
the awesome forces at work. Godzilla's awful power, the nuclear atom, had
turned against him, and it was a power not even Godzilla could survive.
Ken looked at the computer screen in surprise as the radiation levels suddenly
and unexpectedly dropped off to normal. Why?
Meru's eyes popped open in stunned surprise. For there, shrouded in the
mist, was a familiar figure, giving forth a triumphant call................
GODZILLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark Meloon,
you had your field day telling everyone on my page how you felt about this
movie. Well, finally, it's my turn. ;-)
I waited
a long long time to see this movie. I know it was only a year and a half,
but the anticipation made it seem like forever.
I
had to watch it a few times before I understood it myself. My feelings,
not only about this particular movie, but about the whole Godzilla series,
is that they effectively show forth the message that any time man jiggles
the key too hard in trying to unlock the secrets of the universe around
him, he invariably ends up breaking off the key inside the keyhole.
Destroyer
being a direct though inadvertent result of Micro-Oxygen experiments is
a good example. But it is Godzilla himself that holds captive the audience.
As the Big Guy struggles against forces that have turned on him and threaten
to destroy him and take the whole earth populace with him, it is a race
against the merciless tick of the clock.
But
it was the end that really caught my attention. When the camera panned
in on Junior, I felt an overwhelming sense of anticipation, and then joy
at his revival.
All
in all, I don't really think that Godzilla is going to be dead forever.
If I know Toho like I think I do, I don't really think that they would
seriously kill the goose that would lay the golden egg, do you?
;-)
And,
even if they did, I seriously wouldn't mind a revived G series with Junior
as the Godzilla. My feeling at the end of "Destroyer" was that Junior is
definitely gonna be capable of filling in his father's.....er, shoes. ;-)
My
thanks go out to Tom Gleason for shipping me this movie. Since you said
"I can't do it" and I released you from your end of the bargain we made,
I consider this a gift from you and I do thank you!
;-)
