The
Tokyo skyline shimmered merrily in the darkness. The stars dotting the
blueberry sky twinkled cheerily. But there was one that was much brighter
than the others... ...and it darted across the moonlit Japanese sky. The
throngs that normally packed Tokyo's business district were pointing at
this strange phenomenon and whispering excitedly.
Miki watched too, as the "star" increased in size (actually neared in distance) showing blinking lights and shimmering hull that could only belong to an aircraft... Or a spaceship? The papers had the story all over town the next day. "UFO visits Tokyo!" The Japanese Defense Force sent reconnaisance helicopters to investigate the huge alien spacecraft as it sat in the clearing. The copters exploded when they came in contact with the field of energy that the ship put out. The day after that, a television news broadcast put out the story. Terasawa, a young aspiring writer, ignored the television as he spoke to his fiancee' on the telephone. Terasawa planned to write a book devoted to explaining Godzilla's origin; the two went to the office of Yasuaki Shindo, a WWII veteran who had been stationed on Lagos Island during the Pacific War in 1944 and who was now head of Teiyo Company. Shindo laughed off Terasawa's inquiries about the dinosaur that Shindo had seen on Lagos Island in 1944 until Terasawa pointed out that the dinosaur had become Godzilla after exposure to the radiation from the Bikini experiment. He gave the young man a few pictures of the dinosaur, a godzillasaurus left over from the prehistoric age. The
inhabitants of the spacecraft revealed themselves. They were actually human
beings-- two men and a woman -- from Earth's own future. The three future
people- Wilson, Glenchico, and Emmy- meet with the Japanese prime minister
and the cabinet.
Believing their lie, the Japanese gov't sends Terasawa, a scientist named Mazaki, and Miki Saegusa on the expedition back through time; the three, along with Emmy and android M-11, go back through a time-reversal tunnel; to find themselves in the year 1944; they fly to Lagos Island. Before their departure, Emmy shows them a cute little trio of flying animals called Dorats that were on the ship. The astonished group watched as the angry godzillasaur, awakened by the missile barrage the night before, charged the American soldiers, who frantically radioed their ship. The ship's cannons blazed, throwing artillery at the dino, and opening large gaping wounds in its head, neck and chest. The wounded godzillasaur fell to the beach, and the Americans, who had never before seen anything like this, approached the beast cautiously. The godzillasaurus did not move for what seemed like an eternity; then, abruptly arising, angrily charged again; this time killing the entire platoon. Then, just as suddenly as it had appeared, it turned tail and went off somewhere into the jungle. As night fell, Shindo led his platoon into the jungle to the side of the critically injured godzillasaur for one last look; then, bading it farewell, they left. The group, led by Emmy, came to the creature's aid. Once on the ship, they managed to teleport the paralyzed godzillasaur and transfer it to the Bering Sea. Unknown to everyone else, Emmy shoved the Dorats out of an observation port before they blasted off, leaving the Dorats on the island to be exposed to the radioactivity that would have created the original Godzilla.... ...and the group returned to the year 1992. Wilson and Glenchico warmly praised Emmy Kano for a job well done. When Miki asked about Godzilla, Wilson replied that it was gone from history. The group was stunned to learn that a new monster named King Ghidora had appeared. Ghidora came to Japan and began to rip through the city of Fukuoka. Under Wilson's control, through the M-11 android, Ghidora laid waste to Kyushu. Emmy,
racked with guilt over her actions and wanting to stop King Ghidora's rampage,
went to visit Terasawa and admit the truth: that the story about Godzilla
destroying Japan in the 21st century was a falsehood; the real reason for
destroying Godzilla was to allow for the creation of Ghidora, to prevent
Japan from becoming a superpower.
While Emmy is working to repair the android, she changes the program so that M-11 is now a "good guy." Godzilla shows up in Japan in a confrontation with Ghidora. The two take an instant dislike to each other. Godzilla and Ghidora go back and forth with their breath rays. Ghidora wraps one of its slender, muscular necks around Godzilla's throat and tries to choke him. Godzilla begins to foam at the mouth... M-11 had shown up at Terasawa's house and kidnapped him at gunpoint. Taking him back to Emmy, the three destroy the main computer controlling Ghidora, and knocked Glenchico and Wilson senseless. Leaving in the little ship, they set teleportation coordinates. ...until, from the depth of his bowel, Godzilla summoned a throw force that knocked Ghidora onto its back. The enraged Godzilla then fired its breath weapon straight at King Ghidora, blowing off Ghidora's middle head. The teleportation ray fired directly at the ship. Coordinates were set for the northeast coast of Hokkaido... ...where Godzilla stood the victor in the great battle. A sudden noise and light caught the great dinosaur's notice. Turning about, Godzilla eyed the Mother Ship suspiciously. The last thing Glenchico and Wilson ever saw was the bright, blinding light of Godzilla's breath ray as it obliterated them and destroyed their ship. Ghidora got up and shook itself off. Turning tail, it started to run from the site of the battle. Godzilla took notice and fired another blast at the winged creature, burning a gigantic hole in the monster's wing and sending Ghidora careening into the icy, blue green water of the Sea of Ohthosk. Godzilla let out a triumphant roar and, turning about, proceeded to destroy Japan. It was heading for Tokyo, though not before plowing through several other cities. Emmy loved her native country; she did not wish to see Japan crushed like a grape. So she set off for her own time, 2204 A.D. with M-11. The
submarine sliced through the dark, bitterly cold brine of the Sea of Ohthosk.
Turning on the lamp, they managed to locate Ghidora. Shaking his head as
he surveyed the apparently lifeless beast, the submarine commander said
to Emmy, "Two hundred years...I don't think it's alive."
Yasuaki Shindo sat alone in his office as the monster which had once saved him destroyed the prosperity he had built. It was his fault. He was the one who had sent the submarine to irradiate the dinosaur. Now the crew was dead and it was the Japanese people, it was the country he loved so much that must now pay for the mistake. His failure. His fault. He could think only of one honorable solution. He stayed when everyone else ran. He stood at the window as Godzilla approached. Shindo and Godzilla stared at one another, as if they had met a lifetime ago. Shindo remembered the godzillasaur laying on its side; he remembered listening to its labored breathing. Now the same creature stood before him, accusing him of leaving it to die. Much more power, much more strength. And it had been Shindo that had given it to Godzilla. Shindo waited as Godzilla roared; then, rearing back its head, it fired a blast of atomic plasma straight into Shindo's office. Shindo held his breath as the wash of energy obliterated his body. The government office was held in a rapture of stunned silence. Miki and Terasawa watched along with Mazaki, as Godzilla sprayed the building with its deadly atomic breath. Miki wondered if Emmy would ever return to save them. Godzilla continued to pummel poor Tokyo. As the huge feet made contact with the road, the concrete underneath them buckled from the sheer weight. Glass from adjacent skyscrapers shattered, showering the beast with its unforgiving shards; the black smoke billowed upward towards the sky. Would Tokyo survive? A sudden loud noise followed immediately by a bright flash of blinding light caught the monster's attention. An electromagnetic burst took form of a Ghidora, once dead... "Emmy!" Terasawa exclaimed. Ghidora
set down in the middle of the city. Its head had been replaced with a robotic
head; the green eyes stared blankly at Godzilla. Its wings, once broken,
had been removed and replaced with metallic ones. The torso no longer gleamed
gold with gilded scales; now it glared silver, with metal. Ghidora had
been given new life as Mecha-Ghidora!
A few comments. This is one of the most dramatic films I think they ever made. The first time I saw it, my jaw went slack from the amazement! But they should not have done the time travel for several reasons: 1. If they went back to 1944 to prevent Godzilla from being and succeeded, how would the government have known to create another? Big paradox. 2. What happened to the organic Ghidora in the bottom of the ocean when Emmy brought Mech-Ghidora to 1992? Two individuals of the same identity cannot be at the same time at the same place. One of them would have to vanish, according to the movie. If Ghidora had vanished, then it could not lay there for 200 years to be made into a robot. Mecha-Ghidora would not have existed. Another big paradox. 3. Has to do with the whole slew of movies. If Godzilla had not existed until 1992, then his 1989 battle with Biollante would not have happened. No Godzilla equals no Biollante. Biollante therefore could not have had anything to do with the forming of SpaceGodzilla. I realized that the movie was not about time travel but about Godzilla fighting Ghidora. However, if you're going to write about time travel, at least make it fit!!! Don't leave a whole bunch of unanswered questions! The "Back to the Future" trilogy was more believable. Now you realize why God in His creation of the universe made time travel an impossibility...basically, with us in mind. So He idiot-proofed the universe! This was nevertheless a very good movie. |
