This
one is the direct sequel to "Godzilla 1985" and takes up where "1985" left
off. Godzilla is imprisoned inside of Mount Mihara on Oshima island, unable
to injure mankind.
A
new alarm system is established:
Level
1 Meteorological, chemical, psyonic, geologic, or other changes effected
by G.
Level 2 Physical action of G, whether it be voice or motion, is confirmed.
Level 3 The appearance of G
Level 4 The landing of G on the Japanese coastline is imminent.
A new
Super X has also been built.
During
Godzilla's 1985 attack on Tokyo, it left behind fragments of hide. After
Godzilla was contained in Mt. Mihara, the Japanese Defense Forces were
able to go into the ruins of the newly demolished Tokyo and recover the
fragments of Godzilla's hide, which they dubbed "G-cells." An American
company, Bio-Major, sends its own agents into the ruin of Tokyo to compete
with the Japanese army for the recovery of Godzilla cells. Having successfully
completed their mission, the BioMajor agents trade gunfire with the JSDF
only to be killed by a Saradian secret agent and have their precious bounty
stolen.
Once
in Saradia, the G-cells are turned over to the care of Dr. Shirigami, a
Japanese biologist living and working in Saradia, a small, obscure nation
in the Middle East. BioMajor agents planted a bomb in order to retrieve
the stolen cells, killing Shirigami's lovely daughter Erica in the process.
Grieving for his only child, Shirigami does a strange experiment: He attempts
to keep some part of Erica alive by marrying her cells with those of the
common red rose. In a funk, he takes these half-human roses back with him
to Japan. He spends the next five years in mourning over Erica's death.
It
is then that the audience is introduced to Miki Saegusa, a psychic and
a telepathic girl; little more than a kid in this movie. Miki tries unsuccessfully
to detect some faint trace of intelligence in the roses.
Meanwhile,
a scientist by the name of Kirishima is trying to come up with a way to
poison Godzilla by tampering with his cells and inventing "Anti-Nuclear
Energy Bacteria", a weapon designed to drain Godzilla of all nuclear chain
reactions. He gets together with Shirigami for this purpose. He borrows
the G-cells from Dr. Okochi, founder of the Okochi Foundation and the father
of Asuka, his girlfriend. Together they work on developing the bacteria
in Shirigami's lab, where Shirigami keeps the cells for a week.
The
grief-stricken Shirigami witnesses the greenhouse with roses inside shatter
during Mt. Mihara's eruption. He takes the stricken foliage inside to the
lab, and overcoming his reluctance to work with the G-cells, makes the
mistake of amalgamating (fusing) a Godzilla cell with an Erica-rose cell.
Meanwhile,
the BioMajor agents hear of the bacteria and threaten to blow up Mt. Mihara
and set Godzilla loose if Okochi doesn't hand over the bacteria. Goro Gondo,
a colonel in the Japanese army. and Kirishima meet the remaining BioMajor
agent in the parking lot of an abandoned building. The Saradian, wanting
the bacteria too, shows up and begins shooting. He kills the BioMajor agent
and steals the bacteria. The two Japanese men try frantically to disable
the timer in the back of the truck, but too late. The charges at Mt. Mihara
go off, setting the Big Guy free.
The
rose grows to normal height...and keeps on growing. One night, when Biomajor
agents and the Saradian break into Shirigami's lab to steal the secrets
of the Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria, they encounter a huge tendril that
kills one of them and scares the socks off of the other two intruders.
Dr, Shirigami arrives at the lab the next morning to find a dead body being
toted
out on a stretcher and a huge hole torn in the wall. He also finds the
remnants of a tendril sawed off by the Saradian's dagger.
Asuka
and Miki burst in and frantically inform Shirigami that there is a monster
standing in Lake Ashino. Kirishima, Shirigami, Asuka and Miki go to the
lake to stare at the beast, a 90-meter rose with a big thick stem. Shirigami
acknowledges his responsibility for having created it and names it Biollante.
Miki probes Biollante's essence with her telepathic power and detects Erica
Shirigami's consciousness. She also senses Godzilla slicing through the
ocean's briny waters toward Japan; he wants to fight Biollante. Godzilla
appears in Japan and makes a beeline toward Lake Ashino where Biollante
sits. The two engage in battle; it's reptile against rose bush.
Godzilla
gets the best of his opponent and Biollante gets a thorn with her rose
(just had to!) Biollante retreats into the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere
just this side of space. Godzilla moves into Osaka and begins to lay waste
to the city. Kirishima and Gondo go to the Saradian's office and beat him
over the head. They find the bacteria just in time. They inject Godzilla
with the bacteria; unfortunately, Colonel Gondo is killed in the process.
The
JSDF wait in frustrated anticipation for Godzilla to die; but to their
chagrin, he doesn't even get sick. He takes off toward the mountains in
the northern regions. They decide to try to raise his body temperature
so that the bacteria can multiply. They do this with artificially induced
lightning and ground electrical pads. Godzilla is on the rampage and it's
him against the army when Biollante makes her second appearance. She has
changed. Instead of a giant rose, she looks a bit more like a cross between
Godzilla and Audrey II (from Little Shop of Horrors.)
The
two go head to ugly head in a monstrous battle. An exhausted Godzilla begins
to feel the effects of the bacteria that are coursing through his bloodstream.
He falls to the sandy beach, his reptilian head sticking in the water.
During the battle, Godzilla inflicted several mortal wounds on his assailant.
A dying Biollante disintegrates in flames, and Miki reaches out to Biollante
with her telepathy. She sees the spirit of Erica leaving the monster's
remains.
The
Saradian shows up and drops Shirigami with a bullet through the heart.
An angry Kirishima gives chase. The Saradian is killed when he stands on
one of the electrical pads. Asuka catches up with Kirishima to offer him
assistance when they are interrupted by a familiar roar. Godzilla revives
from his fevered slumber; but instead of going inland to wreak more havoc,
Godzilla swims out to sea.
